A Study on the Types of Work History for Those who Have Experience in Self-employment
Son Yeon-Jeong

Abstract
Individuals who have experienced self-employment at least once in their lifetime are more likely to have diverse and complicated career paths than individuals who continued to work only on wages. This study aims to conceptualize the patterns of work history among workers who have ever been self-employed. Using the 22nd wave of Korea Labor and Income Panel Study(KLIPS), this study examined work history of the group over 25 years since the year they started their first job. Employing sequence analysis, this study has classified eight types of the work history among the people with experience of self-employment in their lifetime and they were named as ¨ç transition after continuously regular worker, ¨è continuously self-employed with employees, ¨é continuously self-employed without employees, ¨ê continuously unpaid family worker, ¨ë frequently changing job type, ¨ì continuously temporary worker, ¨í retired as a regular worker, ¨î early retired as a wage worker. As a result of comparing the personal characteristics and income of each type of work history of self-employed people, it was confirmed that there was a big difference in average wages according to the type of work history even within the same self-employment experience. These results suggest that future policies for the self-employed need to be specified and subdivided considering the characteristics of the self-employed with heterogeneous work histories.
